Sometimes,
the goings-on in the 3dmm community can make for some really
good source material for movie making. There already is a
3dmm-exclusive genre known as the "community movie"- and when
they are actually backed up by some serious imagination and
aren't just sloppily thrown together hate movies they can be
really entertaining (see "Powerplay"). "Generations" by the
relatively new director "Jalal" is one of the community based
movies that actually ends up being fun to watch- due to some
hilarious voice acting, great jokes, and surprisingly good
directing.
"Generations" is a movie based on the long-running flame war
between Thomas Bown and Doughboy, and Ramza Brave. Actually,
it's about the end of this period of hatred, which is good,
since a movie about people insulting each other back and forth
wouldn't stay interesting for very long. After watching Ramza's
new movie "Replay 2" Bown and Doughboy try to talk about how
much they didn't like it, though they fear the consequences that
should follow, being as they're in a movie partly made by Ramza
Brave. Sure enough, they're bombarded by gay jokes. Tired of
this crap, they decide to try to smooth things over with Ramza.
You might expect (being as Ramza is the one who wrote this
movie) for Ramza to come out looking like a saint, and Bown and
Doughboy to end up looking like evil patronizing bastards. As it
turns out though, Ramza ends up looking like the biggest jerk in
the movie (he also gets my personal favorite line: "Sometimes to
really figure things out, you have to become a serial
killer...", hahaha). Sure, Bown and Doughboy don't get off
without being hit just as hard (check out their broken,
prepubescent voices, hilariously done by Jeremy Dick and Jeff
Ching), but it's nice to see that Ramza didn't take the easy
path of making himself look like the "good guy".
One thing I have to say that really surprised me about this
movie- Jalal is a really good director! I seriously didn't
expect to see animation and camera angles that were this good
from a "newbie" movie maker. No offence to all the newbies out
there, when a director releases one of his first movies I always
seem to have low expectations. This really surprised me
though...maybe Jalal isn't as new as I thought he was...? Either
that or he just learns quickly. Either way, animation gets high
scores. A couple hand made scenes were built kind of odd - for
instance, the one where Ramza beats up Doughboy on the sidewalk
looked kind of weird to me...mostly because when the camera
zoomed in the sidewalk seemed to triple in size.
...but besides that, great stuff!
One thing that I thought really worked in this movie were the
jokes- some really hilarious stuff here! Every one of Jeff's
Doughboy lines were classic. Ramza's voice was a little low and
hard to hear in comparison, but he had some great lines that
made me laugh out loud also. I found myself even laughing
through the "drama" scenes...not really sure if that's a good
thing or not (I assume that no part of this movie was really
meant to be taken seriously). Yep. Not much else to say really
without giving all of the jokes away. Funny stuff! The penis
jokes were a little overused (although I usually consider one
to be too much), but besides that, not much to complain about
here comedy-wise. Also, I understand that all of the perverted
jokes had a point, as it was another way of Ramza poking fun at
himself.
I can only assume that I would have got more out of this if I
had actually followed any of the Bown and Doughboy vs. Ramza
war, but still, this movie had enough great jokes that I can
recommend it to anyone who just wants a good laugh. There were a
couple of just...wrong jokes that were carried out a bit too
long, and a few other parts that just left me sitting there
thinking "wha..?", but overall this was a fun laugh-out-loud
worthy comedy that also doubles as a great directing showcase
for Jalal. I'd give it a 79% out of 100%.
