I'll
start off this review with a question that came to my mind soon
after watching Max McIlmunn's other movie "Replay: Replayed"-
"WHY THE HELL AREN'T THERE MORE SPOOF MOVIES??!!". Okay, now
that that's out of my system, let's move on to this movie. "KRB
Revival" is a spoof of the notoriously bad (sorry Bown and
Doughboy...) "Killing Ramza Brave". That movie's storyline was
simple- Ramza releases a bad movie, and Bown and Doughboy decide
to kill him for it. In this movie (which is basically KRB with
newly recorded lines, a few new scenes, and a bunch of animation
changes) Bown and Doughboy release KRB only to find that no one
likes it. Bown forms a familiar plan, "We have to kill Ramza
Brave!" to which his friend Doughboy hilariously replies "Man
Bown...that's your solution to everything.". Pogo once again
proves here that he is the master of the sadly overlooked
"spoof" genre.
One thing people who have seen "Killing Ramza Brave" will notice
immediately is that Bown and Doughboy reprise their roles as
themselves here. This is surprising, considering that the whole
point of "KRB Revival" is to tear apart the movie they made. It
seems that Bown and Doughboy have taken all of this with good
humour though, and do an excellent job essentially making fun of
themselves. So much extra humour is added by the fact that these
guys play along with all of this, and it makes it much easier to
laugh at this tearing apart of a newbie effort at movie making
(not that it wouldn't be easy to laugh at in the first place,
being as I and 90% of the rest of this community are pure evil).
Pogo also does a great job playing Ramza Brave, and gets most of
the movie's funniest lines ("Just don't mess with me, or I'll
make a movie about you doing homosexual things!"). Speaking of
Ramza, this guy actually has more jokes directed at him then
both Bown and Doughboy put together...too bad he didn't
end up playing himself...
Since most of this movie is just lifted off from other people's
movies, it's really hard to rate the technical side of it, so
I'll just say this- this movie is really, really freaking funny-
and with a spoof, that's basically all you need. Once again,
Pogo doesn't miss a chance to take a stab at the movie he's
ripping on. Every frame of animation or line of spoken dialogue
you can think of that deserves to be spoofed in "Killing Ramza
Brave" is spoofed, and spoofed well. This stuff is hilarious- so
much so that I really don't want to give away any of the jokes,
being as how spontaneous and unexpected they are is half of what
makes them so funny. Oh yeah, and pretty much every line the
Ramza character has is worth laughing out loud over. What can I
say? Horribly angry, overly sarcastic humour just appeals to me.
As with "Replay: Replayed" though, it's pretty essential that
you watch the original movie before viewing this, if you haven't
already downloaded it out of sheer morbid curiosity yet. Be
brave, it's worth it to get all of the clever jokes out of this
spoof.
"KRB: Revival" joins "Ninja Guy Dan" and "Replay: Replayed" as
another great reason for more directors to get into making spoof
movies of this kind, as long as they're this hilarious and don't
slip over into the annoying and largely un-funny "hate movie"
genre. Still, I'm looking forward to eventually seeing an
original comedy by Pogo, as I'm sure it'd be really funny stuff.
OH yeah, and I almost forgot, I'm going to be a total hypocrite
and say that the over exaggerated internet lingo humour that I
complained about being overused in my "Replay: Replayed" review
was actually what I probably laughed at the hardest here. Take
THAT any credibility my reviews have left! Anyway, I give this a
85% out of 100%, and that's basically a 100% for a
movie that is essentially just someone else's work with some
things changed around.
